Shift Knob Options for Audi A4/S4 B6/B7 with Automatic Transmissions

Oops! No results, try changing your search!

If you have an automatic, multitronic or tiptronic transmission on a Audi A4 or S4 from 2002.5-2008 (B6/B7) and you want to upgrade your shift knob, here are the options you have available based on my research – if you know of any I missed, let me know! And obviously, if you have a manual transmission, the sky is the limit in terms of shift knobs you can attach – so this article is really only for the automatic transmission drivers who have a much more limited number of options to choose from…

Option 1: Upgrade to the S-Line Shift Knob with Perforated Leather

S-Line, or S4 Shifter (Perforated Leather)

This is an OEM part that slides right on – so if you don’t have the perforated air leather and want it, simply purchase the shift knob off of an S-Line package 2006-2008 Audi A4, and also present on the S4. The part number is 8E1713141AGQPY – thanks to the commenter below for pointing this out!
Option 2: Fit an S6 Tiptronic Knob on (requires minor modification)

Audi S6 Shift Knob

The S6 shift knob has a really cool look to it, and if you car doesn’t already have the perforated air leather steering wheel or e-brake cover then this is a great choice as it will match the other smooth leather surfaces of your car. You do need to make some minor modifications to get the shift knob to fit, but they are very minor – you just have to trim down a few of the tabs to fit correctly. You can read up on how to modify the S6 shift knob to fit here or here on Audizine.com. You can buy the S6 shift knob on eBay:

Option 3: Convert to run any (manual transmission) shift knob you want, using the Supreme Power Parts Tip Mod

Supreme Power Parts Tip Mod

This is a nifty option for those wanting to get a little more creative with their shift knobs – convert it to accept any manual transmission shift knob you want! My friends at Supreme Power Parts have developed this for our cars, and for the relatively low price of $60 you can get this adapter shipped to your door, and use it with any shift knob on the market you’d like – perfect if you’d like to do something a little more extreme than the OEM Audi options mentioned above. You can purchase this at http://supremepowerparts.com/11/0/0/5198/2005.5_Audi_A4_FWD_2.0T.html

Option 4: Have your shift knob re-wrapped professionally

Custom Blue Alcantara Shift Knob

I don’t have any pictures of this, but your last option is to take your shift knob re-wrapped professionally by an upholestery shop in whatever fabric (such as alcantara or suede) or color (white, silver, etc) that you’d like. This will probably be the most time consuming and expensive option, but definitely something to consider.
Know of any other options? Let me know in the comments…

  1. I def like the idea of Option 3. You say it can take any manual transmission knob, how exactly does shifting work with that adapter since audi have push button knobs?

  2. I haven’t used one personally, but the product description by Supreme Power Parts says “How does it work? Pulling up has the same effect as pushing in the button”

  3. I didnt get the whole “pulling up” thing. I guess I should prob hit them up and ask them or you could hit up your contacts there 😉

  4. I think it would cool to replace the gear faceplate to fit the Manual Shift Boot to go along with the Supreme power Tip Mod. I think you should mention this to them since you have contact with themand see if it can be done.

    I think it would Awesome!!!!!!

  5. No I never made it. I got busy with personal stuff, but i’m looking on doing it now. This is why I am looking into the shift boot thing also. Will let you know when I finally do it.

So this is what I want to do to my car. I have been trying to think if it could be done until I finally saw another A4 do it. I think this is an awesome mod. I know you know alot of people that have an Audi. Do you possibly know anyone with a Manual that is parting out their car as I would like to get that silver trim that the manual cars have.

Here is the thread to look at. Enjoy

  7. Isnt it? The thought came to mind so i started searching to see if couls be done. I think yours would look good too since you have the black and carbon fiber interior.

Mine is a bit harder to find since i have beige and wood interior, but im on a mission to make it happen.

  8. The part no. for the B7 S-line/S4 perforated shifter in the first photo (for those who are interested) is:

  9. Looking for a perforated leather steering wheel upgrade (Audi rs4) that will fit my 2001 Audi A6 2.8 Quattro help me out on this one the German supplier denied me saying nothing will fit ? The shift knob, hand brake and the flat bottom steering wheel! To get new perforated matching leather upgrade in the car I think is worth a little research” ideas?

  10. Nick,

Thank you for being so helpful.
I have a A4 B7 Avant, 08, it’s automatic. I’d like to swap the shifter for an S-Tronic shifter I ran across, yet an unsure it will take. Any thoughts?

    Will.

  11. Nick it doesn’t specify which it came from but has the AT shift button and claims to be potentially compatible. It’s an eBay part.

  12. I own a A4 B7 S-Line (Auto-Trans), is there any way possible to replace my shift plate that has P R N D S with a shift boot. Ive been searching around and I havent been able to find the answer I’m looking for. I want to replace the knob with a round knob with a release button to be able to shift from P – D. and a nice leather shift boot to give it the manual look. I know sounds dumb but, B7 A4 doesn’t come manual, and i would really like the look

  13. Hi Steven, the B7 A4 does come in a manual, at least in the US, so worst case scenario you could just buy the trim plate and shift boot from a B7 A4/S4/RS4 in manual. I would think you could probably find a way to just get an aftermarket shift boot to cover the P R N D S plate though, but I’m not aware of anyone who has done this.

  14. Hello Nick, I am staring at the #2 pic….. I can find the RS 4 perforated knob with the same look, but not the smooth one as in your picture…. any help with a part number would be greatly appreciated or if anyone has a nice used or new one lurking around id be willing to purchase from them..
