I always keep my engine as clean as possible for a number of reasons.
1. as you say it makes it easier to spot potential problems, such as hoses leaking.

I recently cleaned my engine bay out and now there is a slight whine coming from the front lower part of the engine? Any clue as to what it could be. I only used a engine cleaner and a hose to wash it down. ??
